Experience report - barefoot running shoes

I wanted to give an update here when I broke in my barefoot shoes. Well, after several sessions with the Indian moccasins, I can now report:

Apparently, I overdid it the first time. For half an hour and sometimes with a 4:30 cut, I felt great. The next day, however, all of the calves and thighs were hardened, and running again was out of the question. So strong that I first had to go to my miracle physio Tietzielli and get treatment.

In the following times I was a little more sensible and only ran 20 minutes, but then over hill and dale, and through the middle of the forest. In any case, this is a really cool change from the sometimes monotonous running training! If you put a spear in your hand, you immediately feel like a primeval hunter on the hunt for buffalo, antelope and whatever else is jumping around in the local forest.

What did i notice? With the barefoot running shoes you automatically run forefoot, which is a good technical training. There is no better way to do it with running ABC. As a result, however, the muscular load increases enormously because it now takes over the complete damping work. You can especially feel the calves at once. So feel free to approach it carefully and don't walk great on asphalt with your shoes.

Conclusion: a good way to gradually wean your feet from the mega cushioning in running shoes. Running in barefoot shoes improves your running technique. It also strengthens the running and foot muscles enormously. The better your muscles are developed for running, the less you have to do with injuries and inflammation. A pleasant change from running training and you can run with your shoes up to 1-2 times a week without any problems.

A word of warning to overweight runners or runners with chronic inflammation: approach slowly and don't run too long straight away!

Otherwise: have fun !!!!

  1. I am a self-confessed fan of barefoot running, so I can only underline your advice on slowly approaching it!

Another tip about customization. Even with normal runs, I have been trying to switch to light, flexible shoes for a long time. In the meantime I got stuck with Inov-8 as a shoe manufacturer, they offer their shoes with a 9, 6 or 3mm drop and are therefore very well suited for switching to "the natural" running style.

I also briefly highlighted the subject of running shoes in my blog.
